Early adhesives such as birch pitch allowed our ancestors to craft weapons and tools to prevail against a hostile environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gluing <\/strong><strong>has been continuously developed over time:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.buehnen.de\/international\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/103_neu-636x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-144\" width=\"159\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.buehnen.de\/international\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/103_neu-636x1024-1.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.buehnen.de\/international\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/103_neu-636x1024-1-186x300.jpg 186w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Speers with birch pitch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>oldest adhesive and sealant: argillaceous (clayey) soil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Neolithic period: asphalt (tar), tree resins and wood tar\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>5,000 years ago: birch pitch \u2013 this early adhesive does not occur naturally and has to be manufactured.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Sumerians made glue from boiled animal skins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1,500 BC: The Egyptians made veneer glue from animal waste products and beeswax was used for craft bonding. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ancient Greeks and Romans used different glues. The profession of glue boiling was born in Greece. The protein-containing glue is called \u201cKolla\u201d (the Greek word for glue).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Late Middle Ages: Glues are used in book printing for the binding of covers and book spines. &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1690: The first glue factory is established in The Netherlands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1754: The first patent for an adhesive (fish glue) is registered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1909 Baekeland registers an adhesive patent based on synthetically produced raw materials. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.buehnen.de\/international\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/33_unt_kleb_buch-786x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-146\" width=\"197\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.buehnen.de\/international\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/33_unt_kleb_buch-786x1024-1.jpg 786w, https:\/\/www.buehnen.de\/international\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/33_unt_kleb_buch-786x1024-1-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.buehnen.de\/international\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/33_unt_kleb_buch-786x1024-1-768x1001.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Chemists, physicists and engineers dealt with the effects of adhesive and cohesive forces, researched the macromolecular structure of the adhesive substances, perfected the known raw materials, and finally found the starting point for even more powerful adhesives in synthetic resins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buehnen.de\/service\/glossar\/kleben-erklaert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our glossary explains how bonding with hot-melt adhesives works.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 20th century was innovative in the development of adhesives.
